protection zone of the Jubilee Colony

Edisonova Street forms the northern boundary of the Jubilee Colony, separating it from a peripheral fabric composed of a heterogeneous mix of terraced and detached family houses, outbuildings, and garages. The northern edge of the colony has a markedly more restrained character: the houses are set directly on the building line along the pavement and, with few exceptions, lack front gardens. As a result, this part of the development appears more modest than other sections of the colony. The reduced level of comfort becomes particularly evident when compared with the central area along Jubilejní Street, where houses alternate between those aligned with the street and those set back to allow for landscaped greenery.

Within this northern frontage, one block built during the second phase was given an unusual form by the architect Ernst (Arnošt) Korner (1888–1966). The block consists of six residential buildings. The corner houses at Edisonova Street 377/15 and 382/25 present their façades parallel to the street line. By contrast, the four intermediate houses (Edisonova 378/17, 379/19, 380/21, and 381/23) are rotated so that their main façades are set at an angle of 45 degrees to the street.

Through this arrangement, Korner created a distinctive saw-tooth composition of terraced houses along the street, which gave rise to the nickname “Accordion” for this part of the block. In front of the diagonally oriented façades, small triangular forecourts were formed, intended for greenery. The ensemble represents an attempt to enliven what might otherwise be a rather monotonous row development.

The principal street façades are articulated by recessed entrances, above which are enclosed balconies on both the first and second floors. The openings of the lower balconies are topped with triangular lintels, while those on the upper floor are rectangular. The houses have double-tract layouts, divided into two sections by a two-flight staircase. Each building originally contained six flats, consisting of a living kitchen, a room, a small study, and a toilet. Each flat also had a corresponding cellar unit in the basement.

During the restoration of the colony, carried out to designs by the architect Pavel Sedlecký, the architectural character of the buildings was preserved. The flats were modernised, and new residential units were created through attic conversions.
