The construction of the new Central Fire Station in Havlíčkův Brod represents one of the most significant public investment projects undertaken by the Fire Rescue Service of the Vysočina Region in the past twenty years. There had been a pressing need for a new location due to the poor state of the original station on Žižkova street. Although this station had been gradually adapted since the early 1970s, it never managed to fully meet the increasing demands of a modern fire and rescue service. The problems included not only insufficient space for equipment and facilities but also its location in a densely built-up part of the town, with difficult access routes and the risk of flooding.

A new site was found within the grounds of the former army barracks on Humpolecká street, which the Fire Rescue Service (FRS) acquired through a gratuitous transfer in 2005. The district department—overseeing the fire stations in Havlíčkův Brod, Ledeč nad Sázavou, Světlá nad Sázavou, and Chotěboř—was already based there, along with sports facilities for firefighting competitions. The addition of the new station therefore helped create a more integrated complex.

The design by Atelier Velehradský is based on the need to clearly separate the functional units. The entire complex was divided into a sports section and an operational one, consisting of two new buildings—the fire station itself and a multi-purpose hall.

With its black façade, the station is conceived as a linear composition of three interconnected volumes. The first section houses the facilities for the service personnel; the central block contains the garages for emergency vehicles with direct access to the response road; and the final section accommodates workshops and specialized units (mechanical, chemical, and technical). The adjoining white-rendered multi-purpose hall, connected to the fire station by a communication link on the first floor, provides sports facilities and inspection rooms. It is spatially integrated with the existing administrative building and is partially accessible to the public—serving as accommodation during humanitarian emergencies.

The architectural expression of the building is restrained, subordinated to functional logic and its technical purpose. The combination of rendered surfaces, metal cladding and large-scale glazing gives it a sober, rational appearance—unpretentious yet with an emphasis on clarity and legibility. A striking artistic ‘tone’ of the entire complex is the concrete entrance staircase from U Kasáren street.

The simple horizontal rhythm of the roofs is enhanced by a series of longitudinal skylights which bring natural light into the most regularly used parts of the layout. The green roofs contribute to rainwater management and the microclimatic stability of the site. Energy efficiency and sustainability were also key aspects of the design.

The new Central Fire Station of the Fire Rescue Service of the Vysočina Region in Havlíčkův Brod was commissioned in 2021. The European Union covered 85% of the costs of construction, valued at nearly 270 million crowns. The project created the conditions to improve the rescue unit’s operational readiness while providing comprehensive facilities, including areas for sports training and handling civil defence emergencies.
