The work of sculptor and ceramicist Anna Klimešová moves fluidly between sculpture and installation. While porcelain and ceramics remain her principal media, she also incorporates acrylic glass and other synthetic materials. Many of her pieces draw on casts and evocations of natural forms—seeds, shells, snail shells, fragments of animal skeletons—as well as human torsos and geometric structures embellished with ornamental reliefs. In her installations, she applies the principle of multiplication and serial repetition of these elements, thus achieving the impression of a pattern or ornament. On a more conceptual level, her work engages with themes drawn from nature—most notably cyclical time and rhythm.
She studied at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Brno and at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague in the studio of sculptor and ceramist Otto Eckert. In the second half of the 1980s, she worked in the ceramics workshop of the Centre for Arts and Crafts in Kunštát, Moravia, and at the Moravian Ceramics Factory. At that time, she also created several monumental ceramic works for public spaces, including objects for Havlíčkův Brod. Since 1990, she has been engaged in freelance studio work.
Her works have regularly been chosen to represent Czechoslovakia and later the Czech Republic at leading international ceramic festivals (Faenza, Italy, 1989; Kapfenberg, Austria, 1999; Bornholm, Denmark, 2010). She has also taken part in domestic ceramic symposia in Dubí u Teplic and Bechyně, as well as sculpture symposia in Blansko.
She regularly presents her work in group exhibitions of the Association of Ceramic Artists, of which she is a member, and exhibits independently both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Her works are held in both Czech and international collections, including the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery – International Museum of Ceramics in Bechyně, the Moravian Gallery in Brno, and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague.
