The Nuselská Primary School building was constructed between 1988 and 1990 as part of the new Pražská-východ housing estate, built by Pozemní stavby Pardubice. The panel complex of three pavilions (classroom, cafeteria and gym) represented a standardized model of civic infrastructure typical of the late phase of the socialist construction industry. The addition of a functional roof extension allowed the building to be expanded into a multifunctional centre, serving both the school’s educational needs and the wider public.

An architectural study by Atelier 02 in 2017, developed into a full project by Michal Topolovský, created new rooms in the previously unused roof space. The partial roof extension, installed on the renovated roof, includes a multipurpose classroom, a planetarium with a 3D cinema, and other auxiliary facilities. The accessible roof also features a terrace with a divided garden and greenhouse for educational purposes. In the northern part of the terrace is an observatory with a mobile telescope placed at the centre of a circular seating area. Access to the roof is provided both via the internal staircase and an external lift, ensuring barrier-free access independent of the school’s main operations.

The rooftop extension consists of a load-bearing structure made of rolled steel profiles, cladding with wall insulation panels filled with mineral wool, which immediately distinguishes it from the original building. The barrier-free interior layout clearly separates the teaching area from the service facilities, while also offering flexible spaces that can be used not only for lessons but also for screenings and public events.

The architects succeeded in integrating an extension into the prefabricated housing-estate school which brings together educational, cultural, and community functions. At the same time, the project demonstrates that even standardized school pavilions can, given a high-quality architectural project, be transformed into modern educational centres—a quality recognised by an Honourable Mention in the Stavba Vysočiny (Building of the Vysočina Region) competition.
Nuselská Primary School is the only one in the Czech Republic with its own planetarium, which is equipped with advanced technology and open to the general public.
