The renovation of the Old Town Hall (HB_87) also included the revitalization of a neglected courtyard, which was transformed into the town hall garden. Once a prison courtyard in the 19th century, the space has been transformed into a place of relaxation just a short distance from the town centre.
The renovation of the town hall courtyard was part of a long-term project to reconstruct the Old Town Hall, which has been underway since 2011 according to a design by the Burian-Křivinka architectural firm. During the renovation of the town’s most important administrative building, the town leadership continued its successful collaboration with Aleš Burian and Gustav Křivinka on the reconstruction of Havlíček Square (HB-VP-R-HN), which began in 2009.
Before the reconstruction, the appearance of the courtyard was shaped by modifications carried out in the 1960s. The space was defined by an old stone wall separating the town hall complex from Trčkova Street, and by a newly constructed entrance to a wine bar, added in 2012. The originally semi-enclosed courtyard was newly defined by a wall of compacted concrete and enclosed with massive oak gates, providing access from Trčkova Street.
On a sloping, roughly square plot, a geometrically organized, intimate space was created, combining a grassy square with a wooden undulating relaxation area. Three types of natural surfaces structure the space into functional zones—an outdoor terrace for the restaurant and a public relaxation area. The courtyard is furnished with contemporary designer pieces, including the wooden relaxation area, benches, and a small fountain. The composition is enhanced by landscaping designed by Eva Wágnerová, which primarily features low tree planting combined with climbing plants along the perimeter walls.
The rear section of the town hall now features a publicly accessible space for relaxation not far from Havlíčkův Brod’s main square.
