The memorial to Josefa Havlíčková (1791–1884), mother of Karel Havlíček Borovský, is located in the lower part of Budoucnost Park, by the dam of Obora Pond. Although modest in size, in its time the monument became a focal point for the aspirations and endeavours of many prominent figures from Německý Brod (Havlíčkův Brod) and across the First Czechoslovak Republic. This was partly because its installation followed the widely commemorated 80th anniversary of Karel Havlíček’s death in 1936.
The initiative to erect a monument to Josefina Havlíčková came from the curators of Havlíček House on the square in Německý Brod, who also financed its construction. The stone for the pedestal was donated by the Slavníček granite quarries in the Humpolec district, and the town coordinated the monument’s construction.
The bronze bust was created by the sculptor Vlasta Dohnalová-Pešanová (1897–1990). Like her husband —the sculptor and woodcarver Damian Pešan —she was connected to Německý Brod through her friendship with Otakar Štáfl, a painter, graphic artist and town patriot. Although Otakar Štáfl had been living in Prague since his student days, he kept in contact with Brod, helping to organize the anniversaries of the founding of the grammar school and the death of Karel Havlíček, as well as the unveiling of the monument to Havlíček’s mother.
The two-day ceremony for the unveiling of the monument was organized by the Committee for the Unveiling of the Monument to the Mother of Karel Havlíček Borovský in Německý Brod. It was led by E. Mušková, director of the Domestic Science School in Německý Brod, and the local branch of the Organization for the Protection of Mothers and Children, while the District Youth Care Department also participated in the preparations. The ceremony was held under the auspices of the president’s wife, Hana Benešová, and the Women’s National Council, an umbrella organization for women’s associations and initiatives in the First Republic.
On the first day of the celebration, T. G. Masaryk and E. Beneš were awarded honorary citizenships of the town of Německý Brod. This was followed by a commemoration of Josefína Havlíčková at the Old Cemetery and the music academy in the Sokol hall.
On Mother’s Day, 9 May 1937, the monument was unveiled and installed deeper inside the park, behind the Hastrman Pond near the former Calvary Chapel—significantly closer to the Havlíček Memorial (HB-pc1736_1) than its current location. Speeches were given by, distinguished Prague representatives from the Czechoslovak women’s movement, including Jarmila Hrejsová-Chýnová, professor at the Municipal Vocational School for Women’s Professions in Prague II, and Milada Horáková Králová, vice-chairwoman of the Women’s National Council. The speeches were followed by a procession around the Karel Havlíček Memorial, which was attended by cyclists, children with scooters and dolls, and members of the Jasoň choir in Brod folk costumes.
In 1942, the bust, along with other bronze works of art, was confiscated as part of a metal collection drive for the war. However, it survived in a Prague warehouse and was returned to Brod in July 1946, together with the statue of Karel Havlíček. Its relocation to the Obora Pond was connected to the destruction of the Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk Memorial (HB-pc2259_44), which had been installed in 1933 in a small park near the Church of St Catherine and later moved to the Obora Pond during the totalitarian regime. When the president’s monument was destroyed in 1961 under unclear circumstances, it was replaced by the Josefa Havlíčková Memorial.
