The increasing technical demands on postal and telegraph services necessitated the construction of a new building to meet modern operational standards and offer improved services to clients. The town also hoped that this step would attract a greater number of officials to the town.

As early as 1906, the municipality had been in contact with the Imperial–Royal Directorate of Posts and Telegraphs for the Kingdom of Bohemia “regarding the construction of a new modern post office building…” The plans designed in 1907 by the Royal Provincial Chief Engineer Karel Pokorný (who had also drawn up the designs for the hospital complex in 1896) were not approved by the postal directorate, as “with regard to the division and use of the rooms, particularly on the ground floor, substantial changes were required.” In May 1909, Pokorný submitted new designs, on the basis of which the final implementation plans and a preliminary budget were prepared by architect Bohumil Šel, an imperial–royal engineer, who was appointed by the town council as its representative to oversee the entire construction process. The winner of the limited tender—to which only local contractors were invited—was the building firm of Otakar and František Lišek. Work began in January 1910 and was completed two years later.

The two-storey corner building, following the layout of the adjoining terraced development, was constructed along Svatovojtěšská street, which opened onto Smetana Square, where the architect designed an entrance to the courtyard at its far end. The ground plan is irregular, composed of two wings meeting at a 60° angle at the street corner. The main entrance, set within this junction in a projecting prismatic tower rising above the roofline, led into a spacious and elegant stair hall from which corridors extended symmetrically to either side.

Upon completion of the building, the ground and first floors were immediately leased to the post office, which relocated here from today’s no.7 Horní street for a ten-year period (1912–1922). The layout allowed for the efficient operation of the institution: in the courtyard, mail was transferred from postal carriages into rooms facing this direction. The ground floor accommodated the processing and distribution of mail as well as staff housing. The first floor contained offices, apartments for officials, and a spacious flat for the postmaster. With ongoing technological developments, several rooms on the upper floor were soon converted into local and intercity telephone exchanges.

The distinguished building, constructed with a reinforced concrete framework, still employed historicizing architectural vocabulary in its decoration—such as bay windows and gables—yet also shows a move towards restraint and a certain geometric simplification. Architectural features such as cornices, long considered essential to sound design throughout the nineteenth century, are notably absent.

The building, which has remarkably retained its original function to this day, has undergone numerous alterations over the years, including the addition of dormer rows to the roof and a complete transformation of the interior.
