A fine example of contemporary residential architecture in Havlíčkův Brod is the single-generation Křehlík villa, built on a sloping site overlooking the Žabinec stream valley. The building plot, with its challenging terrain, offered the owners the opportunity to build a home in a peaceful, almost rural setting, yet within easy reach of the town centre. With its main living areas located on the upper floor, the house provides an intriguing visual connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape.
The owners themselves developed the basic concept for embedding the house into the terrain, along with the final layout and overall project design. They entrusted the architectural study and visual expression to architect Milan Stejskal of Atelier 02 in Havlíčkův Brod, whose work and artistic approach they were professionally familiar with and personally appreciated.
The two-storey building has a ground floor partially embedded into the sloping terrain. The upper level visually consists of two adjoining rectangular volumes with a fully glazed front facade clad in Siberian larch and a flat roof. The second floor, serving as the main living area, is built from ceramic blocks, while the ground floor—housing the building’s technical facilities—is made of monolithic reinforced concrete. The two levels are connected by a staircase illuminated from above by a skylight set into a masonry clerestory, with the main wall featuring a vertical green garden.
The well-organized layout includes a corridor linking the various living spaces and providing access from the terrace to a small relaxation garden, created by terracing the plot and constructing a vertical gabion wall. The collaboration between the architect and the well-informed clients resulted in a high-quality, functional building set on an atypical plot in a quiet part of Havlíčkův Brod, not far from the town reservoir.
