Lubomír Driml was a significant figure in the architecture of eastern Bohemia, whose work shaped the appearance of Pardubice and other towns, particularly in the second half of the 20th century. Although many of his projects inclined toward Brutalist architecture, their realization was constrained by the political, economic, and social conditions of the period.
He was born in Přelouč into a family of musicians. After graduating from the Secondary Technical School in Prague, he studied architecture at the Czech Technical University, where he was influenced by the urban planner Jindřich Krise. His diploma thesis focused on urban planning in his native Přelouč. After graduating, he joined Stavoprojekt in Pardubice, where he worked in Miloš Návesník’s studio. At the beginning of his career, he assisted Návesník with ongoing projects, observed the operation of the studio, and, until 1968, sought to democratize its functioning. He took part in numerous architectural competitions, with some of the winning entries leading to his first realized projects—among them the urban concept for Smetana Square (HB-pc2259_110-pc2259_11 Construction), and the funeral hall in Havlíčkův Brod (HB-2949).
Driml concentrated primarily on urbanism, with a particular interest in the planning of urban complexes. He gained substantial experience in designing the Trčkova / V Rámech housing estate in Havlíčkův Brod (HB-265-266), where he successfully implemented a compromise solution that balanced the demand for housing with the preservation of nature and the historical context of the urban conservation area.
He demonstrated considerable architectural freedom in designing funeral halls in Havlíčkův Brod and Ležáky. These buildings reflect his focus on the rawness of materials, functional design, and integration with the surrounding environment. In the 1970s, he began collaborating with Miroslav Řepa, producing, among other works, the Labe Hotel in Pardubice and the insurance company building in Havlíčkův Brod (HB-1963).
